This course presents the fundamentals of power system protection and relaying devices. Students learn how modern computer-based relays use discrete time samples of power system voltages and currents to compute phasor quantities needed for fault detection. The focus of the class will lean toward line protection in radial, looped and tapped configurations. Students will learn the fundamental concepts of overcurrent, time-overcurrent, directional overcurrent, distance, and pilot relays. Students will also learn how modern relays determine fault type and fault location in the presence of fault impedance for lines fed from two or more sources. Students will develop their own fault study program to help evaluate the effectiveness of different relaying approaches. Students will have homework assignments and two projects during the course. See the Spring 2005 syllabus for additional course details. The course uses a set of course notes that is being developed into a new text on the topic of computer-based power system protection.
